A fight was breaking out in the third-row seat, and it was getting hard to have an electrical talk. A ride in a van with seven kids is never dull.

“What do you want to do?” I asked.

“I want to light a bulb,” he said.

“Well then, the number of volts you would need would depend on how big the bulb is,” I answered.

I thought about what I had read in my library books. The size of the battery doesn’t matter. Power matters. But I was trying to hold back electrical information from John Glenn. You never know what kind of trouble that kid will get in with his imagination.

“Mom, can we go to the pet store after?” asked John Glenn.

“Why?” asked Mom.

“I want to look at the electric eels,” said John Glenn.

“I don’t think they have those, John Glenn,” Mom answered.

“Do they have batteries at the thrift store?” he asked.

“No,” said Mom as she gave him a strange look through the rearview mirror.

At the thrift store, I went to check out the electronics department. John Glenn was turning a lamp on and off. He saw me looking at him and tried to look casual. I tried to look casual too. I didn’t want him to see that I was also interested in electricity.

“What exactly are you doing?” I asked. I opened and closed a waffle maker as I waited for John Glenn to answer.
